Florida Homestead Exemption Filing

Florida Homestead Exemption, when to file:
Exemption applications must be made between January 1st and March 1st for the tax year eligible.  For example, if you are living in your permanent home on January 1st, 2023 then you have until the close of business on March 1, 2023 to file your homestead exemption for that year. The exemption will rollover yearly.

If you are moving from a home that you own in Florida that has a Homestead Exemption and buying another Florida home, read the information on the
'Homestead Assessment Portability' page. The portability application has to accompany your homestead exemption application on your new home.  It can lower your property taxes even more.

Homestead Assessment Portability

The Florida "Save Our Homes" (SOH) program can taxes on your new Florida home.

Portability - You can take it with you!

If I sell my home that has a Homeowners Exemption and buy a new Florida one, will I lose all the tax savings I’ve accumulated over the years?

No!

Florida’s Save Our Homes (SOH) provision allows you to transfer all or a significant portion of your tax benefit, up to $500,000, from a Florida home with a homestead exemption to a new home within the state of Florida that qualifies for a homestead exemption. This is referred to as “portability”.   See all about it and apply for portability by clicking here.
(You apply when you file for your new home Homestead Exemption.)
